A driver tempted fate this afternoon when their vehicle careened off the precipitous State Route 175 between Hopland and Lakeport descending 30 feet down the embankment where their vehicle came to rest upside down in a ravine. Reports from the scene indicate the driver self-extricated and required medical attention at the scene.

Scanner traffic and the California Highway Patrol Traffic Incident Information Page indicate the accident occurred around 5:36 p.m. when the driver spun out after hitting some water in the roadway causing them to lose control and drive off the eastern embankment.

Initially, first responders requested air assets respond to the area to help search for the vehicles due to the steep terrain. By 6:08 p.m., fire personnel at the scene had located the vehicle upside down in a ravine approximately 30 feet below the roadway.

UPDATE 6:58 p.m.: Authorities have implemented a hard closure of State Route 175 as they attempt to recover the vehicle involved in this incident. The roadway will reopen once the vehicle recovery is complete.

UPDATE 8:11 p.m.: The involved vehicle has been extricated State Route 175 is open to traffic.

  1. Driving too fast on wet roads will get you into a ravine…you think?

But apart from that judgment, CALTRANS NEEDS TO STRAIGHTEN 175! iT IS SCREWING US IN LAKE COUNTY. It makes it difficult for tourist to get here, and for cargo to get here.

The 20 is a mess especially through Nice to Clearlake Oaks…slow and curvy.
If your heading south the options are to go on the 20 where it empties into the 101 10 miles North of Ukiah! So much for gas saving. Not to mention the grade into Lake county uses lots of fuel and for electric car users energy. CARVE IT DOWN FLATTER CALTRANS! STRAIGHTEN OUT THE 20 NEAR BLUE LAKES. DOUBLE THE PASSING LANES.
LET’S MAKE ACCESS TO THE 101 EASIER FOR LAKE COUNTY RESIDENTS.
YOU’VE BEEN SCREWING US NOW FOR DECADES.
    GET IT TOGETHER.
