The following is a press release issued by the County of Mendocino:
On May 13, 2024, at approximately 10:00 A.M., the Redwood Empire Hazardous Incident Team (REHIT), will be conducting their annual hazmat training exercise to protect the safety of the public. The exercise will take place at 3200 Taylor Drive, Ukiah. Multiple fire departments will be staging on a property nearby to allow for the flow of traffic to the local businesses. Said fire equipment will be used as part of the training exercise.
REHIT is the all-hazards hazardous materials response team headed by Mendocino County Environmental Health. Members of the team come from fire departments, CalTrans, and various law enforcement agencies. The team can respond to anything from a traffic collision to chlorine gas to a radiological event.
In this exercise, the REHIT members will be responding to a simulated chemical interaction, which leads to potentially toxic off-gassing. REHIT members will be wearing chemical protective suits. Fire departments will also be participating in the exercise and will be conducting decontamination. The intention of the exercise is to prepare for a real-world incident involving hazardous materials household collection facility.
