NASA Images Reveal Toxic Algae Bloom Clouding Clear Lake

NASA scientists have published an image of Clear Lake after it turned bright green due to an algal bloom that appeared in mid-May. This bloom, visible across much of the lake, was captured in a satellite image taken on May 15.

The bloom may include blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria. These organisms can produce toxins like microcystin, which can irritate the skin and harm the liver and kidney.

Clear Lake, located about 60 miles north of San Francisco Bay, has a history of supporting large algal populations. However, human activities have increased nutrient levels in the lake, causing more frequent harmful algal blooms. These blooms typically occur in the spring and late summer.

Nutrients from farm runoff, septic systems, and other sources feed the algae. Recent analysis showed increased levels of chlorophyll-a, a pigment in algae, throughout early May, reaching a peak on May 15.

Local water quality monitors have not yet measured toxin levels for this bloom. Even without toxins, the large amount of algae can harm aquatic life by reducing oxygen levels in the water.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and advising residents and visitors to stay informed about water conditions.

Drove by it several times in May and we both commented best we have seen it in years, clear and blue but don’t believe your eyes believe NASA Climate agenda scientists.

During the drought it was awful, especially the smell.
