The Ukiah Pride and Progress Walk and Picnic brought a vibrant display of diversity and inclusion to the community on Saturday, June 15, 2024. Approximately 60 walkers traveled from Black Oak Coffee to Alex Thomas Plaza, making a colorful stop at the Mendocino County Courthouse along the way.

Participants gathered at Black Oak Coffee at 10 a.m. and embarked on the Pride Walk, proudly waving rainbow flags and carrying signs of support for the LGBTQ+ community. Upon reaching the courthouse, the walkers sprinkled tempera paint in a myriad of colors on the steps, creating a symbolic and vivid statement of unity and acceptance.

The celebration continued at Alex Thomas Plaza from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., transforming the area into a hub of festivity. Food trucks, friends, and families filled the plaza, coming together to show their support for the LGBTQ+ community. The event featured a variety of activities and offered a space for everyone to celebrate pride and progress.

Photographer Peter Armstrong was on hand to capture the joyous moments of the day.

  1. What is the purpose of sprinkling pigment on the courthouse steps? Just seems disrespectful considering someone else will need to clean up the mess. Tempera may be water soluble and non toxic but it just seems to be a D*** move.

      • You mean Spokane, right? I read about that, seems a tad over zealous to me. Meanwhile police just stand by and watch protestors deface statues in Lafayette Park.
Here, I don’t think anyone will be riding their scooters up the stairs.

    • So, do you think writing on a sidewalk with chalk or pastels rises to the level of vandalism?
Tempera paint is very similar in it’s ease of removal.

You may not like it, but it’s extremely unlikely to cause anything negative excepting your imagined problem.

    • This pride celebration isn’t teaching vandalism. If that’s the case we have been doing the friday art walk for many years at Alex Thomas plaza where kids and adults would use sidewalk chalk to draw pictures on the side walks and that’s ok. And who cleans that up?

      • No, I don’t consider this vandalism, just a bit on the inconsiderate side. I see a big difference between the chalk art and just pouring Tempera on the steps. Those steps can be tricky enough for some people without adding powder to the mix.

        • Sprinkle some Tempura in Trump colors and just sit and watch how much of an outrage this would create. Double standards favoring a bunch of twisted and confused people.

    • I’m glad we live in a country where I can strongly disagree with you. Betrice, what do you see when you look in the mirror? Look into your own soul, you might find to source of your intolerance, maybe you will see what is truly disgusting.
