From Mendocino County to Santa Rosa: High-Speed Chase Ends in Mall Arrest

Categories:

A high-speed motorcycle chase spanning Mendocino and Sonoma County ended in the arrest of a rider at the Santa Rosa Plaza on Saturday, August 24, 2024, following a dramatic pursuit that began near Healdsburg and involved several law enforcement agencies.

The chase started at approximately 6:55 p.m. on August 24, when a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer attempted to stop a Suzuki GSXR street bike on northbound Highway 101 near Healdsburg, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office. The rider, instead of complying, fled at a high rate of speed, quickly disappearing from sight before Geyserville.

A second sighting occurred near Cloverdale, where the motorcycle once again evaded CHP officers, speeding away toward the Highway 128 exit north of Cloverdale. As the motorcycle crossed the Sonoma-Mendocino county line, the pursuit became increasingly dangerous, with speeds reportedly reaching 140 mph, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

The Sonoma County Sheriff’s helicopter, Henry-1, located the motorcycle north of the county line and relayed its position to CHP officers stationed south of Ukiah, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Despite attempts to stop the bike, the rider continued fleeing, leading law enforcement on a perilous chase through Ukiah before turning back onto southbound Highway 101.

In an effort to protect public safety, CHP officers strategically backed off as the motorcycle entered Hopland, allowing the helicopter to continue monitoring the situation. The chase, witnessed by residents and passing motorists, saw the motorcycle briefly pulling into a Hopland gas station before resuming its high-speed flight toward Sonoma County.

As the pursuit entered Santa Rosa around 7:45 p.m., the rider exited Highway 101 onto Davis Street, eventually reaching the Santa Rosa Plaza parking garage. With the assistance of the CHP’s helicopter H-30 and the quick response from the Santa Rosa Police Department, the suspects—two individuals on the motorcycle—abandoned the bike and attempted to flee on foot into the mall.

Law enforcement quickly established a containment perimeter around the area, and the suspects were located and detained inside the mall shortly after 8:00 p.m., the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office confirmed. The rider was subsequently arrested by the CHP.

  1. What a waste of resources chasing a single motorcyclist. Think of how many lives were put at risk because of the flee and the pursuit. Not to mention, the insane amount of overtime the Henry 1 pilots make.

I, for one, wish our resources were spent on actual public safety pursuits.

      • You were correct, Henry 1 spotted the suspects before the chp helicopter took over the chase. It was was a very risky and expensive pursuit. But the incident ended in the best way with the apprehension of the wanted subjects. Somehow without any injuries to the public, the responding officers, or the bike riders. Now it is up to the courts to do their job and incarcerate the reckless motorcyclist and possibly the passenger. I would bet this isn’t their first rodeo…and they’re up to some horrible crimes if they’re willing to flee the authorities at 140mph on a motorbike.

  2. Good thing it wasn’t a dirty inbred white boy meth head or they probably would of pulled over and molested some kids real quick. You know those crazy white boy tweekers love them some kids.
