From Mattresses to Needles: Ukiah Locals Tackle Gibson Creek Trash

It was a beautiful morning to get a bit of outdoor exercise by picking up trash in Ukiah’s Gibson Creek. The volunteer group was organized by Adam Gaska, and supported by the City of Ukiah, which provided a dump truck to haul everything away. A City crew had come in the day before and hauled away some large items, including a mattress, and most, but not all, of the needles.

The group met at 8:30 am at the Orchard Street Bridge, and began walking through the creek with trash bags, buckets, and pickers. The volunteers cleaned the creek bed and banks as far as Oak Manor School. We managed to fill up the dump truck.

Among the volunteers were former candidates for First District Supervisor Carrie Shattuck, Redwood Valley Municipal Advisory Council Member Patricia Ris-Yarbrough, and Toni Fort.

Ukiah Police Department’s Sgt. Randall and Trainee Tony Sayavongsa stopped by to check on the volunteers, and even pitched in to haul away some trash until they were called away by the dispatcher.

Gaska has been coordinating with the City of Ukiah and the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Department to schedule future creek clean-ups. He is planning clean-up events at Ackerman Creek and along the Russian River at Talmage Road. If you are interested in participating in future cleanups, shoot a message to Adam Gaska on Facebook Messenger.

  1. These gang bangers have sloppy graffiti writing l, they probably got kicked out of high school.

Now to clean up the graffiti where JCPenney use to be. Ever since they closed, the parking lot had gotten worse and turned into Skid Row

    • Why would public citizens volunteer to clean up someone’s private property? If you’re mad about the graffiti, contact the building owner.

  2. Thank you for the article Monica!
    Thank you Adam !
I grew up in Ukiah and Gibson Creek was
full of trash when I was a kid.
I would say that there is a lot more a awareness and enlightenment about helping to keep our environment cleaner.
Of course when was growing up I never aware of needle usage.

  3. Hey all you Mutha F’s trashing the creeks. The hell is the matter with alla you bitches? Are you all stupid? Or slow? Or half wits? Why would you trash waterways? G-D stupid POS’s. I can’t even take my grandson to walk the creeks cuz you stupid asses trash it with your shit and your needles and your f*cking garbage. Not all Street people do that to the Creeks I know. But the ones who do? You’re all garbage and worthless pieces of shit, with no regard for anything. You are too disgusting to be on the planet. Sickening disgusting rats, you are. Alla ya’ creek trashers.

    • McCowen was following in the footsteps of Mike Sweeney, former head of Mendo Solid Waste.
Though, Mike was quite aggressive in his methods.

Some people are still dumping pickup loads down slopes that inevitably make into creeks.
Mill and Orrs Creeks, and the Main Stem Russian up Tomki are still hotspots.

Is good for all to remember that garbage/litter let loose along on our roads often washes into the storm drains and then the creeks and river (and ultimately the ocean) when left uncollected.

Has anyone taken a walk or riden a bike along any of our roads lately?
Most all are lined, to varying extents, with trash, garbage, and litter.
Is quite disgusting and very ugly.
