SFGATE: County officials threatening eviction, demolition of Humboldt hippie haven

For four decades, the commune known as “Yee Haw” has provided a home for Humboldt County residents seeking a back-to-nature lifestyle near Trinidad, California. Residents enjoy spring water, communal meals, and DIY homes, led by Charles Garth, a landlord described as a caring, flute-playing figure. However, the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors recently revealed a different side of Yee Haw, showcasing photos of unsafe living conditions, including makeshift outhouses and uninhabitable structures. Critics accuse Garth of neglect, while county officials laid out a 39-week plan to either clean up the property or demolish unpermitted structures and evict residents.

The ongoing conflict traces back to 2001, with Garth facing $62,000 in fines for code violations. While some tenants defend Yee Haw as a sanctuary amid housing insecurity, officials argue that living in substandard conditions cannot be tolerated. The Board of Supervisors voted to move forward with the abatement plan, but they acknowledged Garth might be granted a reprieve if he shows significant progress. When asked if he would comply, Garth responded, “If it makes the government happy, I’ll do it.

This may not be Mendocino County, but the clash between those fighting for their way of life and a government committed to the common good is quintessential Northern California.

  1. EPA has selected 11 environmental justice thriving community grantmakers… California is in region nine… That will receive 600 million to serve as passed through entities nationwide through the environmental justice thriving communities grant making program.

The grout makers will provide sub grass to community base nonprofits and other eligible sub recipients for assessment, planning, and project development activities. Projects could address arrange of environmental issues and promote healthy communities. Examples include small, local cleanups, emergency, preparedness, and disaster, relief, green jobs and youth programs, air and water, quality projects and healthy homes. This grant could be a solution to the problem at hand described in the article about the hippie Haven.

  2. When are the county supervisors going to make the Fair grounds ADA compliant? Don’t they have bigger problems than harassing hippies?

  3. “caring, flute-playing figure” lol! Oh my god, no this dude is a total creep. He only cares to get in your pants if you’re a chick and if you want nothing to do with him he becomes a passive aggressive ass.
His nature loving hippies are just a bunch of beer drinking, pot smoking lazy f**ks that steal you’re stuff.

I completely disagree with the county harassing people over their property but please don’t be disillusioned about Charles Garth, he doesn’t care about people he only cares about what he can get from them.
