Writing about life after the Leggett Post Office Disaster reminded me how powerful communities are in small towns. Six months after losing their community mailroom to a bolt of lightning, residents filtered into the Leggett Valley School library to hear a contractor talk about plans for the new post office. The audience was eager to both have their voices heard and see some friendly faces. Another resident decided the charred remains of the lightning-struck redwood should be turned into a one-of-a-kind piece of chainsaw art, memorializing the storm that took their Post Office. Reporting on these folks made me happy and thankful to call Mendocino County my home.
