Fire rips through Ukiah apartment complex, forcing evacuations

Categories:
A nearby resident captured the fire as it tore through the apartment complex last night

A fire tore through a multi-unit apartment complex on the 100 block of Lovers Lane in Ukiah on Friday night, prompting evacuations and knocking out power to dozens of customers, according to a review of archived scanner traffic.

Firefighters responded around 8:29 p.m. to reports of a fully involved apartment fire at a complex near Lovers Lane and Feedlot Lane. Crews worked to evacuate residents, including assisting a handicapped individual, while battling flames that spread through the two-story wood-frame structure.

At 9:13 p.m., incident command reported the fire had been knocked down, though crews continued checking three buildings for possible fire extension. Officials requested assistance from the Red Cross to support displaced residents and worked to determine the number of impacted families.

Pacific Gas & Electric reported a power outage in the area, affecting 37 customers. Crews were assessing damage to restore service, with an estimated restoration time of 1 a.m. on March 1.

Authorities restricted traffic on Lovers Lane during the response, and emergency crews, including law enforcement and medical personnel, were dispatched to the scene. By 10:03 p.m., a Nixle alert was lifted, signaling that immediate danger had subsided.

We have reached out to the Ukiah Valley Fire Authority for more information and are awaiting their response.

  1. This is a terrible tragedy for all of those involved. Those apartments have been in dismal shape for decades. Housing and Urban Development a lot of clients live in there on HUD certificates charging maximum rent. It is a time to highlight the need for safe housing for people. Because you are low income does not mean that you have to live in unsafe, dilapidated housing. Always wondered how long it would take for some kind of a tragedy to occur at these apartments. May those displaced find safety and assistance quickly although it can be an incredibly difficult road to recover from. May these apartments be quickly removed and some new safe energy efficient units take their place.

  2. This complex has been ripe and ready for a disaster like this for a long time. The place is basically falling down. Maximum rent is charged. Many people on housing certificates. Super tragic what happened to these people that was absolutely out of their control as far as the flammability of the units. Hopefully they can get some support and be able to recover. Tear the whole place down and start anew. Several other complexes are at risk too. Housing inspections need to hold landlords accountable for keeping properties safe and updated.

  3. Valley Fire survivors like my family got next to no help from the over bloated Red Cross. Our neighbors in Lake, Mendocino, Sonoma and other areas raised a huge amount to help the 1250 households destroyed. Blessings to Redwoid Credit Union, North Coast Opportunities and the huge number who donated money, supplues and time. You are angels.
