The following press release was issued by the California Highway Patrol, Santa Rosa:

Yesterday afternoon at approximately 3:58pm, a traffic collision was reported on SR-1 south of Fort Ross Road. A passerby observed a vehicle over the embankment and reported the vehicle was on its roof. Santa Rosa CHP officers responded to the scene and the vehicle was located approximately 100 feet down the west embankment. The vehicle was difficult to see from the roadway. First responders hiked down to the vehicle and located a solo male occupant in the driver seat. He was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene. The vehicle, a Volkswagen Golf, was cold to the touch and it is unknown at this time when the crash occurred. Preliminary investigation indicates the VW was traveling southbound on SR-1. For unknown reasons, the VW left the roadway to the right. The VW traveled down an embankment and rolled onto its roof. At this time, the name of the deceased is being withheld pending family notification. If anyone witnessed this collision or the events leading up to it, please call the Santa Rosa CHP Office at (707)588-1400.
