The following is a press release issued by the California Highway Patrol:
On 09/27/2021, at approximately 1555 hours, Ukiah CHP responded to a solo vehicle collision, located on SR-1 south of Frog Pond Road. During the investigation it was determined, Party-1 was driving a 1982 Dodge pickup northbound on SR-1 at a high rate of speed. Due to Party-1’s high rate of speed, Party-1 was unable to safely negotiate a sharp turn and drove across both lanes of SR-1. Party-1 continued off the roadway and down a steep hill. The Dodge rolled over multiple times and landed on its roof appropriately 200 feet down. Upon landing on its roof, the Dodge was fully engulfed in flames. Party-1 sustained fatal injuries as a result of this collision. Party-1 was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. At this time, it is unknown if alcohol and/or drugs are a factor in this collision. The cause of this collision is still under investigation.
The identity of the involved party is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
I drove by the scene this morning and it was clear the vehicle went very fast around the corner north bound and it was wet from the rain. There were not skid marks though the vehicle did clip the end of the guard rail and then went about 150 feet down the hill. It is very sad to hear they did not get out before the fire started. There is still quite a bit of stuff from the vehicle beside the road and down in the valley. Sad for the family and their loss.
