A standoff between a fugitive and law enforcement on Laytonville’s Branscomb Road has resulted in the deployment of SWAT, a Hostage Negotiation Team, and Behavioral Health personnel to assist in de-escalating the situation, Mendocino County Sheriff Matt Kendall told us.
Initial reports gathered over the police scanner indicated that around 9:00 a.m. the suspect was pulled over by law enforcement and barricaded himself in his vehicle. Scanner traffic indicates the individual could be armed with a firearm and is threatening suicide
The California Highway Patrol has sent a helicopter from Redding to assist in the situation and law enforcement is actively securing the location.
Sue Carberry, former Chief of Laytonville Fire Department, told us that Branscomb Road is closed as a result of the ongoing incident.
UPDATE 9:53 a.m.:Scanner traffic indicates that despite being requested, Behavioral Health personnel will not be responding to the incident.

Sheriff’s Deputies have responded to the area of the Long Valley Fire Department in Laytonville (Branscomb Road) at the request of CHP after a traffic stop was conducted on a vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle (sole occupant) became hostile and barricaded inside the vehicle.
The driver is believed to be a want person who failed to surrender at the Mendocino County Jail yesterday after recently being granted a short term release pass from a local magistrate.
The Mendocino County Regional SWAT Team has been deployed to assist with the situation and verbal negotiations with the driver are ongoing at this time.

UPDATE 10:05 a.m.: Scanner traffic indicates the subject in the vehicle is threatening to commit suicide by law enforcement.
UPDATE 10:27 a.m.: Via the police scanner, California Highway Patrol will be evacuating residents in the immediate area of the incident.
A resident with boots in the ground told us the SWAT teams are loading up their armed vehicle. The resident reported there are approximately 10-15 law enforcement vehicles amassed at the scene.

UPDATE 11:20 a.m.: The door of the suspect’s vehicle is now open and the negotiations are ongoing, according to a resident who sent us this photo.

UPDATE 11:45 a.m.: According to a tweet by the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Department, “Barricaded subject situation has ended with successful apprehension by SWAT team members. No reported injuries to subject or law enforcement personnel.”
UPDATE 11 a.m.: Verbal Negotiations for a peaceful surrender are still ongoing in the Laytonville barricade situation,” reports the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Department on their Facebook page.
