A Highway 101 traffic stop became deadly this afternoon near Ukiah leaving one dead and the highway jumbled with dozens of law enforcement vehicles as officers investigate the scene. Highway 101’s southbound lane is completely closed as a result.
California Highway Patrol Officer Alex Kimball told us the fatality along Highway 101 this afternoon was the result of a shooting that occurred after CHP officers conducted a traffic stop.
Initially, the subject was pulled over by law enforcement between Perkins Street and Gobbi Street on the southbound side of Highway 101. The driver was suspected of being a Be-On-the-Lookout subject out of Pacifica.
Officer Kimball could not confirm an officer fired their weapon, but said “the traffic stop resulted in a shooting.” He did confirm that no officers were injured as a result of the incident.
Regarding the extended highway closure, Ukiah CHP posted the following message on their social media: “US-101 southbound closed between Perkins Street and Gobbi Street due to an active and ongoing investigation. Detour is in place. Please seek alternate routes to avoid delays.”
The Caltrans Quickmap indicates the traffic is backed up significantly along Highway 101’s southbound lane.
UPDATE 4:51 p.m.: As of 4:40 p.m., Highway 101’s southbound lanes appear to have cleared and an officer reported over the scanner they were opening the roadway. Traffic is flowing relatively smoothly as of 4:41 p.m.
