The Mina Fire, Mendocino County’s largest wildfire of the 2024 season so far, is holding at 50 acres and is 30% contained as of this morning, according to CAL FIRE Mendocino.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the blaze, which ignited around 2:10 p.m. on Monday, July 8 in the hill country northwest of Covelo near the intersection of Mina Road and Zenia Lake Mountain Road Real-time dispatches indicated the fire originated within a structure before spreading to nearby vegetation and rapidly growing to 50 acres.
An Incident Update issued by CAL FIRE Mendocino this morning confirms that one structure was destroyed in the fire. Firefighters have been battling the blaze in “extreme conditions” characterized by “steep and rugged terrain, high heat, and low humidity.” The fire has been fueled by “grass, brush, and various timber.”
Firefighters are currently holding control lines and cutting new ones to manage multiple spot fires. The fire continues to burn in “heavy fuels, which require heavy mop up.”
An evacuation warning remains in place near 97550 Mina Road, northwest of Covelo, California. Significant resources have been deployed to combat the Mina Fire, including 28 engines, six water tenders, two helicopters, 10 hand crews, 10 dozers, eight air tankers, and two air attack units, totaling 250 fire personnel.
Glad to see that the previous couple of post have been removed.
Evidently the turmoil of the 1850’s in Round valley is still alive and rages on.
