The Ukiah Branch Library has launched a Little Free Pantry to support community members in need, according to a press release from the Mendocino County Public Library.
The pantry operates on the principle of “take what you need, leave what you can,” and is stocked entirely through community donations. It is open 24/7 for anyone needing food or personal hygiene items, library officials said. Donations of unopened, non-expired, and non-perishable items such as canned goods, rice, pasta, cereal, and infant formula are encouraged. Hygiene products like shampoo, menstrual supplies, and toothbrushes are also welcome.
Donations can be dropped off at the library during operating hours. Library staff will collect, organize, and stock the pantry, ensuring it remains accessible for those in need.
“Many of our library patrons are facing food insecurity. This pantry is one way to help take care of our community,” said Megan Wolf, a library assistant. The effort was inspired by similar initiatives like the Caring Cupboard in Willits and the nationwide Little Free Pantry movement.
The Friends of the Library built the pantry, which joins a growing network of libraries across the country using grassroots solutions to combat food insecurity. According to Feeding America, over 15% of Mendocino County residents experience food insecurity, with nearly a quarter of those individuals not qualifying for federal assistance like SNAP.
