The following is a press release issued by the California Highway Patrol Garberville Office. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:
On May 2, 2022, at approximately 1635 hours, a white Nissan pickup truck driven by Valerio M. Garcia Luna was traveling northbound on US-101 north of Bell Springs Road. A gray Honda Civic driven by Dalya Dhamar Olea was traveling southbound on US-101 north of Bell Springs Road just north of the Nissan. Garcia Luna drove the Nissan from the northbound lane over the double yellow lines and into the southbound lane into the direct path of the Honda. The Nissan struck the Honda head on and both vehicles came to rest blocking the southbound lane of US-101. Olea sustained major injuries and was transported to Howard Memorial Hospital from the scene for medical care. Garcia Luna was determined to be under the influence and was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol and causing injuries to the driver of the Honda. Garcia Luna was transported to Howard Memorial Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and then was subsequently booked into the Mendocino County Jail. The southbound lane of US-101 was closed for approximately one hour for the investigation, clean-up and vehicle recovery.
The California Highway Patrol would like to thank Cal Trans, Laytonville Fire Department, and Cal Fire for their response and assistance at the scene. The collision remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol – Garberville Area.
Garcia Luna was booked at the Mendocino County Jail on the following charges:
23153(a) VC – Felony DUI of alcohol resulting in injuries to another person.
23153(b) VC – Felony DUI of alcohol with .08% BAC or higher.
12500(a) VC – Unlicensed driver.
23578(a) VC – DUI with BAC .15% or greater.
