A Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) has been declared in Mendocino County around 12:45 p.m. on March 1.

The MCI declaration comes after medical personnel were requested to the Mendocino County jail. According to scanner traffic, there are at least four patients, some, if not all, receiving CPR.

As of 12:59 p.m., scanner transmission between dispatch and emergency personnel, indicates that five patients are suffering from fentanyl overdose. At least 3 of the 5 patients have been transported.

We are attempting to reach the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office for updates, however, given the urgent, serious nature of this call, there may be a delay before MCSO personnel are able to respond.

UPDATE 1:30 p.m.: All the inmates are alive, confirmed Sheriff Matt Kendall by phone this afternoon. He told us that the incident began earlier today with one patient showing signs of fentanyl exposure and then Narcan had to be administered. Then, Kendal said, “six other people in that wing began to show signs right after meals. Mealtime is when things get spread and shared as in narcotics and things like that.” Kendall said that six inmates were affected.

Please remember that this story is unfolding. Information is being reported as we gather it. However, some of the information coming from witnesses and initial official reports could be wrong. We will do our best to get the facts but, in the case that something is inaccurate, we will update with correct information as soon as we can.

  1. Wow, so you can’t keep it out the jail, how you law enforcement agencies going to keep it of the street’s? Better communicate with with your community!!

    • If the community really cared then the community would be calling in tips on the dealers like on their; neighbors, uncles, friends, dad’s, mom’s, etc. it’s not like the deals are being made in front of the few UPD and MCSO on duty. Get real John. Take off your blinders so that you can see the big picture. It’s every citizens part to keep a community safe. Maybe start a citizen watch group online John. What are you doing to stop this?

  2. This is just part of an epidemic in our country. Our leaders have failed to stop the flow of this drug. It’s scary that this is happening, and obviously, it got past the jailers.

  3. They can’t keep it out of the jail because prisoners have a lot more rights to do and move things in jail due to our state laws and many use the old keyster method to move these items freely. Very easy these days.

    • So, still my question is: How do law enforcement agencies plan to keep it off the streets of they can’t keep it out of their facilities??

      • Well you are correct that they can’t. Society needs to decide what they are willing to tolerate. They aren’t stopping it on the streets and stopping very little in jail. Jail is only a time out now for violent crime and major theft. I always make my decisions based on whether I’m willing to tolerate the same crime happening again. If not, go hard. If so, let’s give chances.

      • John, do you really think people don’t hid drugs in their body cavities when they go to jail. How do you suppose they get it out??? It’s not only LEO job to get drugs off the street. People know drug dealers all over this county. No one is knocking on the front doors to law enforcement, asking them to take drug dealers off the streets and providing information. Don’t you think every citizen in this community has an obligation to keep their community safe??? Don’t just be an internet troll, get out their and help your community!

        • You know nothing there are people coming to city hall and to police department all the time complaining that there’s a house in their neighborhood dealing drugs. Known individuals are OD-ing at same residence’s and nothing happens. The police don’t care. You are a fool if you think law enforcement doesn’t know what’s up and who’s got it.

  4. ??????Thank you JESUS that none of them died today!!!

Jesus loves us us even when we’re at rock bottom. Y’all have another chance to cry out to Jesus for salvation. That’s what I did. So don’t accuse me of being judgemental.

I have been praying for our inmates AND law enforcement daily and this morning was no different.

I believe God spared them today!
    Thank you Jesus!!! ????

  5. So what we are seeing more often is as the drs and medical community are attempting to alleviate the opioid “crisis” by denying pain relief and shaming so many who truly need it they have in turn created a monster. Many otherwise average citizens who are productive within their communities are either contemplating or have already begun obtaining these pain meds on the street, in often fatal or near fatal situations such as these inmates. This is creating supply and demand on a huge level and the cartel capitalizes. As per usual it’s the cartel and blackmarket profiting while we lose our loved ones. This has to stop.

      • I blame the doctors and medical community for treating all pain patients like addicts and denying them relief. They made these “customers” who in turn created the supply and demand.

If a company doesn’t have sales, they slow down production. Black market is no different.

  6. consider the source of the issue.
the fentanyl comes from the ccp.
same place that is shipping all those military aged males thru the Darian Gap into what is used to be our Republic. straight out of the book Unrestricted Warfare.
focus on the source of the problem if you are capable…otherwise stay “numb and entertained.”

  7. I blame the opiod crackdown under Obama completely. Remember when pain meds were safe. When you could get legitimate pain meds from companies like Merck and Pfizer and Astra-Zenaca that were prescribed by a doctor. For legitimate pain needs. The good old days. Drug addicts will always find a way to get high and dealers will always find a way to make money. In the mean time fatal opiod overdoses have more than doubled. Because Mexican drug manufacturers don’t have quality control measures. They don’t care. If somebody overdoses it drives up the demand for a certain batch because drug addicts know that means your stuff is strong. Junkies want it more if they know that poo-butt lightweights are overdosing on it. Some dealers intentionally manufacture lethal batches on purpose to drive up the price. If it’s strong enough to kill then it must be good shit. That’s the way it works. So glad I’m not in that life anymore.

  8. Everyone’s pointing fingers at who’s fault it is, at this point we should be focusing on getting rid of it instead of still focusing on who to blame. Not to mention if these jailers really want this bs to stop, maybe they should go to more measures to be sure that drugs and etc aren’t being smuggled into their jails and prisons. The “old keister method” seems to be used a lot for all of these drugs and weapons. Clearly the jails know sho why aren’t they going to the measures they should be going to to keep this bs out of their systems??? Search people’s assholes is that’s really what u gotta do since people REALLY gotta smuggle drugs in their assholes. Absolutely outrageous
