First 5 Mendocino and CrossFit Firefly with IMPACT Bay Area are proud to present their first Self-Defense and Situational Awareness course for teen girls July 29th & 30th from 1pm-6 pm each day. This offering is a response to three teens girls being accosted in the downtown area in January of 2024 and countless other incidents our community encounters on a regular basis. Due to a lack of safety protocols in the area and an increase in boundaries being crossed we are motivated to assist the community in the area of self defense and situational awareness. This course is generously supported by Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and the VOCA grant for the purpose of assisting Victims of Criminal Acts.

This initial course will be run by IMPACT’S highly trained instructors and will be for all gender identifying females ages 12-17 years old. Eight of the spots in this course are reserved for Victims of Criminal Acts. We will be offering another class for males 12-17 years old in the early fall. IMPACT’s highly trained instructors focus on preventing stranger and peer violence while empowering students to understand, respect, and defend their own boundaries. The course will give participants realistic ways to handle a variety of attacks while using the full force of their strength to resist. This course also helps train teens to overcome their freeze response by simulating realistic attacks in a safe environment with the correct protective gear and highly trained coaches.

The long-term vision is to get situational awareness and self-defense to all ages and communities who would benefit from this valuable knowledge. As citizens we cannot wait for our leadership to address the growing issues we are dealing with on a day to day basis. We hope to engage the community and teach everyone excellent self-defense and appropriate response through Impact’s amazing trainers and programs.

    • Beatrice – respectfully – the issue is poor leadership, mismanagement of finances, imperfect legislation that trickle down from the state, increasing crime and drug addiction, refusal of services and a high level of personal and community apathy. The issues of crime – including the one that inspired creating this training – did not come from immigration or illegal citizens – many of whom have gone through the process to be US citizens and make up the fabric and foundation of this country. It came from a long time resident with an incredibly long wrap sheet who has intent to harm women and children – repeatedly.

Each circumstance is different. Everyone has opportunity to be involved. Let’s make some change and make our community better, safer and enjoyable.
