On 08-28-2024 at approximately 11:02 P.M., deputies from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to contact the victim of possible criminal threats made in the Covelo, CA area.

Deputies responded to the area and contacted the 33-year-old female victim.  Deputies learned the female was involved in a domestic argument with her boyfriend, who was identified as 41-year-old James Lamonte Mathis. Mathis had left the residence prior to deputies arriving at the scene.

During the course of the investigation, deputies developed probable cause that criminal threats were made by Mathis towards the female. Deputies issued a B.O.L.O. (Be-On-The-Look-Out) for Mathis’ arrest to all law enforcement agencies in Mendocino County. Deputies searched the area, but were unable to locate Mathis.

On 08-29-2024, deputies continued to try and locate Mathis to no avail. Due to the nature of the threats made by Mathis, deputies contacted the Mendocino County Behavioral Health Response Team (BHRT) to assist with contacting Mathis. The BHRT attempted to contact Mathis to determine if he would peacefully surrender to deputies.

At about 8:00 P.M., The BHRT was able to make contact with Mathis on the telephone. After speaking with Mathis, the BHRT convinced him to peacefully surrender to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office.

Mathis was ultimately placed under arrest for 422 PC (Criminal Threats) and was subsequently booked into the Mendocino County Jail where he was to be held in lieu of $30,000.00 bail.

The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Behavior Health Response Team for their assistance with this peaceful resolution.

  1. This man caused the the round valley schools to go on lock down for threats of shooting his step son. He only lived 1/2 mile down road from our schools. My kid and other kids was calling parents wanting to go home. When I picked up my child all I seen was one tribal officer sitting in school parking lot. There was no sheriff no chp only ONE tribal. I asked the school if the problem was taken care of, I was told yes and there was no more threats. 30 minds later I find out the guy was still at large unknown if armed. Once again not one site of officers was around. When the guy surrendered he was watched by community members until authorized law finally arrived 3 hours later. This man is a felon that was in possession of ammo and gun. He was claimed to have been intoxicated since night before. He’s not mental he was intoxicated and at rage caused terrorism threats towards our kids school. Law enforcement did not do their job as what has been claimed. A $30000 bond is all he has to face then probably will go into mental health program at his own will to attend and before it’s over will be determined 51/50. Then allowed to live right by our schools again.
To much fake news given to the public when safety is at bay. Are we for certain kamala didn’t do this interview with mendofever about issue at hand. Sure sounds like her style.
Mendo law enforcement, don’t play with our emotions when it comes to the safety of our children. Tax payers pay your salary. Quit causing high speed chases with one kid that realy isn’t a menace to our town. While causing more danger too the small streets we have, take a real look at the problem, grow a pair and fix this town. If not, stand down out of our town, bc there’s decent people that are not scared to keep our community at peace. And stop your lies to the public. Before this lies get exposed with proof.
This really disgust me to read this.

    • What was done or said to this guy to set him off? Just curious. Always felt I should walk a mile in someone else’s shoes before passing judgement. Not saying you are wrong or the law enforcement is right. In my experience law enforcement causes more trouble than is warranted. In fact, I have no faith in law enforcement and the judicial system. Just a bunch of bullies, and if you have enough money, no worries.

  2. ” criminal threats” is a broad brush for a Domestic argument. The “suspect” left then instead of Psychological intervention he was Jailed. People misspeak saying things in a moment then apologize.
