One person is dead after a vehicle plowed into a tree along Highway 101 south of Laytonville early this morning.

Scanner traffic and the California Highway Patrol Traffic Incident Information page indicate the accident occurred around 1:16 a.m. near Highway 101 and Steele Lane.

Initial reports indicated a vehicle was engulfed in flames after colliding with a tree.

When firefighters arrived, the car fire had extended slightly into the wildland but quickly got the flames under control. Sadly, the occupant never made it out of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
