Authorities have confirmed that a body was discovered in the area where a missing camper was last seen along the Mendocino County Coast.
48-year-old Rebecca Jones went missing on January 5, 2024, in the Hardy Creek area north of Westport last seen walking towards the Pacific Ocean approximately 200 yards from the shore.
Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Captain Greg Van Patten told us that yesterday searchers located Jones’s “clothing and a body trapped in some rocks near the shoreline” where she went missing.
The body has yet to be recovered, Captain Van Patten said, due to “hazardous surf conditions”. Recovery efforts will continue tomorrow.
Captain Van Patten specified that “The body is unidentified but speculation yesterday was that it was possibly the missing person.”
As per a press release issued by the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office yesterday, Jones was visiting Mendocino County camping with a friend in the Hardy Creek area.
The press release detailed that Jones left her campsite with no hiking gear, food, or water wearing green pants, a red hoodie, and a black and white hat. She reportedly had “experience hiking in the outdoors but did not inform anyone that she was leaving on a hike.”
