Ukiah Family Welcomes Rare Leap Year Baby

Mackenzie Dailey, a new Mendocino County mama, welcomed her baby girl to the world at 2:19 am on February 29, 2024 – a Leap Year anomaly. Athena Noelle Dailey seemed like she’d make her entrance on February 28th, but she had other plans and things slowed down until she became a Leap Day surprise for the family’s Ukiah home.

Dailey told us her labor was a positive experience thanks to midwives Adrianna Martin and Caitlin Kirkman from Bloom Water Birth Center. “Athena cried before she was even fully born and has been alert and strong since,” she said.

Dailey told us how her husband Tyler will approach Athena’s birthday celebrations: “We will celebrate on 2/28 normally, so she still has the same month to celebrate in. One day early instead of late. And then every 4 years, we will throw a big party.”

Athena’s entrance into the world on Leap Day carries a statistical quirk, with a mere 1 in 1,461 chance of being born on this specific date.
