The following is a statement issued on the Cloverdale Police Department’s Facebook page:
The Cloverdale Police Department is contracting with a private investigation firm to reopen the investigation into the unsolved rape and murder of Sara Ann Geer, a Cloverdale teenager who was found in the downtown area of Cloverdale on the morning of May 24, 1982.
The department hopes that the investigation team will be able to re-examine case evidence to give the investigation some new light or find new evidence to analyze with the latest technological advancements in cold case work.
The decision to reopen the case stems from earlier conversations with the investigation firm after the initial case review which dates back to late 2019.
The primary reason more information about reopening the case was not disclosed earlier is due, in large part, to unnecessary rumors, hearsay, uninvolved party interjections, and misleading information posted on social media which has already threatened to jeopardize the integrity of the investigation moving forward.
The community is being asked to avoid posting misleading information about the case to allow the seasoned investigators to actively pursue justice for Sara Ann and her family.
