Scanner traffic indicates that law enforcement, fire, and medical are responding to two incidents in Covleo this afternoon starting around 3:10 p.m.: a reported stabbing and another wounded with a gunshot.
The gunshot wound victim was reported to be at Keith’s Market and the stabbing victim was reportedly somewhere near the Covelo Fire Station.
It is unclear at this point whether these are two separate incidents or somehow related.
The scanner indicates an air ambulance is on its way to Round Valley to transport an affected patient.
We will be reaching out to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office for more information and will update when it is available.
UPDATE 4:00 p.m.: Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Captain Greg Van Patten provided us with more information regarding this afternoon’s incident in Covelo.
What was initially reported as both a gunshot wound and a stabbing has proved to be just a singular incident of a stabbing.
Captain Van Patten said MCSO’s North Units are on the scene of a reported stabbing in Covelo that occurred at “the store”, likely Keith’s Market.
The stabbing victim was supposedly stabbed in the neck during an argument. The suspect, Captain Van Patten told us, is described as a Hispanic male adult wearing a blue sweatshirt and black jeans.
The victim has been transported to the Covelo Firehouse to be picked up by an air ambulance.
The characterization of two incidents in our initial reporting was due to both being referenced in scanner traffic, and our need to correct the article and the title points towards the importance of following up with officials.
When we initially published the article, the title was “Gunshot Wound and Stabbing— Two Incidents in Covelo This Afternoon”. After getting a statement from law enforcement and finding that there was no shooting, we decided to change the title so the public could get a better sense of the facts.
Please remember that this story is unfolding. Information is being reported as we gather it. However, some of the information coming from witnesses and initial official reports could be wrong. We will do our best to get the facts but, in the case that something is inaccurate, we will update with correct information as soon as we can.
