Dirtbiker Fatally Impaled by Branch in the Mendocino National Forest Was Wearing ‘Full Protective Gear’

The following is a press release issued by the California Highway Patrol:

Dirt Biker kicking up dust on Cow Mountain [Picture provided by BLM]

On 04/10/22 at approximately 0950 hours, Party #1 was riding his 2022 Husqvarna on an Upper Lake Ranger District OHV Area designated trail. Party #1 came upon debris blocking the trail and applied the brakes to his motorcycle, which resulted in Party #1 being ejected from the motorcycle and falling into brush. Despite being in full protective gear, Party #1 was impaled by a broken branch. Medical aid was attempted at the crash scene.  Party #1 was moved to the Middle Creek Campground Staging Area. An uninvolved party in the staging area called 9-1-1. Emergency crews arrived and attempted to render medical aid. Party #1 was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Alcohol and/or drugs are not a factor in this crash.

  1. You can’t go flying down some trail in the mountains without knowing what condition the trail is in. What may have been a clear trail last year or last month or last week could be blocked when you apply the throttle. The rider could’ve have taken the trail many times before and it was clear, but it wasn’t this time. Seen many an ambulance heading up Cow mountain to rescue off roaders and trail bikers. You just don’t want to be “that guy”.
