On December 26, 2023, the California Highway Patrol, Garberville Area conducted an enforcement operation in the Covelo area through the GREAT (Garberville-Round Valley Enforcement Action Team) grant. At approximately 6:30 pm, officers patrolling on SR-162 in the community of Covelo conducted an enforcement stop after observing a vehicle driving in the bicycle lane to avoid slowing for a speed bump. Upon speaking with the driver, who was identified as Lenox John Reyes II, Reyes II hastily fled the scene in the vehicle which was also occupied by three juveniles. The vehicle was observed turning into a driveway and officers responded to the location of the vehicle. Officers were able to take Reyes II into custody without any further incident. It was determined Reyes II was on Post Release Community Supervision (PRCS) and incidental to his arrest, officers located live ammunition on his person. Reyes II was booked into the Mendocino County jail for charges of; 1203.2 PC – Violation of PRCS, 30305(a)(1) PC – Felon in possession of ammunition, 148(a)(1) PC – Delaying/Resisting peace officer, 23222(b) CVC – Open container of cannabis, 16028(a) CVC – Proof of insurance.

Funding for this program was provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The mission of the CHP is to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security.

  1. Ot on def’s side but Didn’t charge him for the probable cause offense. Speed bumps /humps not recognized as a traffic control device so you can’t be stopped for not slowing down or avoiding it. But the bike lane one is…a citation..if he’s smart he’ll just say he went into bike lane to make right hand turn….but changed mind when police started to pull him over. There are exceptions for traveling in bike lane,
