Lightning Strike Sparks a Small Fire in the Hills East of Covelo

A lightning strike ignited a small wildfire east of Round Valley this afternoon prompting ground and air resources to respond.

Scanner traffic began around 5:48 p.m. with dispatch relaying to firefighters that a lightning bolt struck a single tree near Timberridge Trail, a rural road east of Covelo.

As a result, CALFIRE deployed a firefighting helicopter and a hand crew to the scene.

Multiple lightning trackers such as WeatherBug and LightningMaps.org show this area was bombarded with lightning strikes this afternoon.


UPDATE 6:28 p.m.: A firefighting helicopter viewing the fire from above confirmed that a single tree was on fire and predicted the fire had little/no chance of spreading.
