Megan Miltmore and her boyfriend were on one of their Mendocino Coast road trips last December when they found themselves in the village of Caspar.
They stumbled on a little shack, festooned with vines, door ajar, windows dusty with time. Miltmore said, “There was something enchanting about this beautiful, yet run-down little building, sitting just a little off of the main road.”
The moment “was the perfect photo op on such a beautiful day.”
These sorts of sights, that remind us of the transitory nature of life, impermanence, and the beauty of age, beckon William Butler Yeat’s poem “When You Are Old”:
When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;And bending down beside the glowing bars,

And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.
