MendoMoments: ‘Frost and Fire’- A Covelo Sunrise on a Chilly Morn

A sunrise over Covelo [Picture provided by Covelo resident Michael Buchanan]

Winter is here. Tomorrow is the day of the long night. Rain and snow are forecast through Christmas. Leaves have fallen and many have migrated to daily long johns to take the edge off the chill.

Covelo resident Michael Buchanan awoke this morning and looked eastward. The sun had yet to peer above the horizon, but its glow had caught the clouds. The underglow was gold, to magenta, to a crimson reminding us of the multiplicity of the sunrise.

A frigid haze lay over Round Valley, and the silhouettes of leafless oaks told of a time when their arms outstretched with brilliant plumage.

When Buchanan was asked what inspired him to photograph the moment, he simply told us, “Just wanted to share some beauty.”

T.S. Eliot wrote of winter’s stark beauty in his poem Little Giddings. An excerpt:

When the short day is brightest, with frost and fire,
The brief sun flames the ice, on pond and ditches,
In windless cold that is the heart’s heat,
Reflecting in a watery mirror
A glare that is blindness in the early afternoon.
